Memorial Day Weekend is synonymous with Greek Fest in New Orleans, and 2017 has May 26, 27 and 28 earmarked for one of the best foodie fests in the city. Eat, drink and dance the weekend away while feeling like you were whisked from the land of Creole to the land of Greek Gods where you’ll dine on ambrosia and the freshest of seafood.
The food’s the star at this family-friendly event, and you’ll be saying “Kali Orexi!” (“bon appétit”) all weekend. Authentic Greek dishes, handmade of course, are plentiful, from the calamari to the gyros, the feta fries to the souvlaki, sumptuous spring lamb and the beet salads. (Don’t worry, there are steamed hot dogs for picky kids!)
A Greek Affair
Now in its 44th year, the festival is also famed for the non-stop events and entertainment. Take a guided tour of the local cathedral, catch a performance by the Hellenic dancers, and get down to Greek music with your own moves. The Athenian Playground is a mecca for little ones, where they can climb the Mt. Olympus wall, bounce on inflatable fun and enjoy face painting.
Cathedral Tour Chanters set the mood, while the Greek Festival Races are a fitness-fueled way to celebrate the long weekend. Toga Sunday complements the live Greek music, and taking a canoe out along the bayou is a recipe for romance.
