Coming Up: Bastille Day Block Party

Celebrate the city’s French past NOLA-Style!

Coming Up: Bastille Day Block Party

Bastille Day is a celebration of the French Revolution, in which the downtrodden poor overthrew a wealthy and selfish aristocracy, demanding fairer government.  In New Orleans, the Bastille Day Block Party is an evening party paying tribute to the city’s French roots after beginning as a festival that showed the city still had its fighting spirit after being ravaged by Hurricane Katrina.

Food And Drinks

New Orleans does not host parties that don’t involve food, an unsurprising fact in a town that is known for a wide number of signature dishes.  Numerous restaurants will be out, serving up their delicious fare, including 1000 Figs, Cafe Degas, and Toast Cafe.  Plan on just eating your way down Ponce de Leon St!

Most restaurants will also be offering soft drinks, but if you’re seeking something a little stronger, you’ll be able to find offerings from Swirl Wine, among others.  Drink responsibly but have fun!

Entertainment

Live music will be everywhere, with acts such as Jamie Lynn Vessel and Harmonouche playing.  Cynthia Scott will be performing “La Marseillaise”, the French National Anthem, to kick off the event.

You might also want to enter the two look-a-like contests – dress up as Marie Antoinette or Napoleon Bonaparte and see if you win!  If costumes aren’t your thing, the competition is still fun to watch – people go all out so expect to see some elaborate outfits!

Also present will be numerous local artisans displaying their work, from ceramics to paintings and more.  Enjoy browsing – you’re likely to find some stunning pieces that you need to take home.  While you wander the festival, you’ll also have the chance to learn some French games, such as petanque.

The event is always popular among locals, and if you really want to see the heart of New Orleans, it’s certainly a can’t-miss.  Afterwards, enjoy visiting some of the buildings that embrace NOLA’s quirkiness!
