Where To Find The Best Gumbo In New Orleans
New Orleans is home to some amazing food, but nothing beats gumbo, so here’s some restaurants with the best gumbo in town
Neyow’s Creole Cafe
3332 Bienville St, New Orleans, LA 70119
Neyow’s does a rich and flavorful gumbo with crab, shrimp, sausage, and ham that will have your mouth watering from the scent alone. Get the Extravaganza meal, which pairs the gumbo with a steak and seafood platter, and two desserts (always choose the beignet sticks!).
The Gumbo Shop
630 St Peter St, New Orleans, LA 70116
You can tell from the name this restaurant will have good gumbo! The Gumbo Shop offers three different types of gumbo – seafood, chicken and sausage, and herb – and while all are delicious, the chicken andouille gumbo is the real winner here. The flavors are delicately layered on each other, so that when you taste a spoonful, you will sense every step and ingredient that goes into making the dish.
Mr. B’s Bistro
201 Royal St, New Orleans, LA 70130
Mr. B’s is a small, upscale bistro best known for their Gumbo Yaya. While they have a more traditional seafood gumbo on the menu, their Gumbo Yaya is about taking the classic flavors and multiplying them. The broth is darker and richer, the seasoning is spicier, the meats are heartier. One taste and you’ll understand why this is an award-winning dish.
Heard Dat Kitchen
2520 Felicity St, New Orleans, LA 70113
Heard Dat Kitchen is a tiny, slightly run-down place with some delicious food. The Gumbo Combo serves up a bowl of spicy and rich gumbo with a grilled cheese sandwich and Southern potato salad. The recipe is reminiscent of Grandma’s recipe, with traditional flavors, and the servings are so big, everyone will go home full.
1403 Washington Ave, New Orleans, LA 70130

Just had the best leftovers from my family Birthday Brunch at #commanderspalace We started with their Shrimp Henican and Oyster Dome (not pictured but delicious!) then on to a soup trio of their #seafoodgumbo #shrimpandmirliton and the famous #turtlesoup …I had the quail stuffed with boudin but sampled the pork chop with sweet potatoes and catfish over popcorn rice followed by the also ultra famous #breadpuddingsouffle ..and those 25 cent martinis! #happygirl #commanderspalaceneworleans #cheers #happybirthdaytome #HBD #nolaeats
Commander’s Palace takes Creole dishes to the next level. The entire menu is impressive, and the Turtle Soup is exquisite, so people forget about their gumbo sometimes, and that is a huge mistake. The ingredients change depending on what’s particularly fresh that day, but the flavor palette is always multi-layered and exceptional. Go at lunch so you can pair it with 25 cent martinis!
