Where Can I Get Pupusas in New Orleans?

New Orleans is an absolute food mecca where you can find French, Cajun, creole and southern staples galore. It’s the birthplace of bananas foster, but what if you’re craving something a little different? La Macarena Pupuseria and Latin Café is one of the few Latin establishments in New Orleans, and they take the honor (and responsibility!) seriously.

Located at 8120 Hampson Street, free delivery is available after 6 p.m. to local neighborhoods, and you’re welcome to bring your own booze with no corkage fee if you dine-in. La Macarena’s opened when the family realized there was a severe lack of Central American cuisine in New Orleans. What began as an El Salvadorian restaurant has evolved into a real Latin fusion gem.

What’s on the Menu?

Salvadorian chef Isabel Ochoa-Galvez uses secret family recipes as well as techniques she’s learned in Italy, Spain and Portugal. Open for brunch and dinner, you’ll find a wide selection of pupusas including all chicharron, all cheese, portabella and roasted pepper, spinach and cheese, and shrimp and cheese.

Separate vegetarian/vegan and meat menus suit every palate. Try the sweet corn tamale with homemade cream or the organic chicken flautas. The chef is always creating new delights, so keep coming back for something new.
